Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson, known for works like Treasure Island, was a fan of the toy theatre, “... those pages of gesticulating villains... bosky forests, palaces and war-ships, frowning fortresses and prison vaults — it was a giddy joy.” This book reproduces his 1884 essay on the subject, ‘A Penny Plain and Twopence Coloured’, in full, together with a comprehensive introduction and notes by David Powell that explain the historical context.
The essay is presented in the centre of the book as a reprint of the six original magazine pages from The Magazine of Art, complete with the original illustrations.
